In the past, Turkey was one of the export destinations of Iran’s electricity, and Iran was supposed to connect to the European market in this way. Although this issue has been interrupted in recent years, now the path of Iran’s electricity to Europe through Turkey has been paved.
Recently, the authorities have announced the beginning of the exchange of 600 megawatts of electricity with Türkiye; An issue that can give reality to Iran’s long-standing desire to become the hub of the region and to reach Iran’s electricity to Europe.
Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, the spokesman of the electricity industry, said in a press conference on Wednesday regarding the details of this issue: Now the synchronization is done, we have entered 600 megawatts into the exchange on a trial basis, and currently we have received the equivalent of 3.5 days of electricity from Turkey and 3 We issue 5 days. This work is done with the world’s latest technology in the form of a back-to-back post, and with this technology, frequency disturbances are prevented.
According to him, 600 megawatts have been exported at this stage and we hope to expand the exchanges. Europe is one of the routes that we can reach through Turkey.
He recently asked how much electricity can be exported to Europe through Turkey. He said that this issue depends on the restrictions that Turkey has with European countries. Now Iran has the capacity to export up to 600 megawatts of electricity through Turkey.
Recently, Arash Kurdi – the CEO of Tavanir, also said in a press conference in this regard that there is no need for submarine routes in the north of the country and we can connect to Russia through the existing lines. We can also export electricity to Europe through Turkey, but we are facing problems because it has to be done through intermediate countries.
He added that the issue of communication with the Persian Gulf countries, northern countries and the issue of increasing exports to Pakistan is also discussed. Regarding Afghanistan, it should be said that due to the specific political conditions of this country, it is not possible to make a definitive statement. The main point is that we are facing consumption restrictions, but we will adhere to the contracts we have signed for export, from a legal and international point of view, but the priority is to meet domestic needs.
Iran’s export capacity is currently around 1,000 to 1,500 megawatts under contract, and there is a possibility to increase this number to 2,000 to 2,100 megawatts. Examining electricity export and import data shows that Iran’s energy balance is currently positive; So that 80% of exports and less than 20% of imports take place. Iran has the goal of becoming the electricity hub of the region seriously on its agenda, and in this regard, it has agreed or negotiated with neighboring countries in the last year.
Iran’s power lines are connected to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey and Iraq. Also, the initial synchronization of the electricity network with Russia has also been done. It has also been agreed with Qatar that this exchange will be established through a sea cable, and this plan is now in the study stage.
It seems that Iran has taken a serious decision for its electricity exchanges, which will not be an endless goal considering the potentials in this area. Also, due to the limitations that are sometimes encountered during peak times, these exchanges can be a major solution.
